Moving as a family

Moving with kids

Local Schools

Before even considering to move, do your research on the local schools that are in the vicinity of your newly chosen destination. While picking a beautiful, comfortable home is important, it is also equally important for your kids to have a good, safe school to attend without needing to travel too far.

Current school year

When moving your family with kids, consider the current school year. It is always easier for kids and teenagers to move while transitioning between school grades, meaning the summer. Not only will it be less stressful for you to deal with but it will also allow your children to unpack and get accommodated in the new home before they have to deal with the stress of starting the new school year in a new school.

Packing their own things

Encourage your kids to participate in the moving process and pack their own belongings, not only will it take some workload off of you but it will give your kids a sense of importance in the whole process. Make sure to have them pack a backpack full of essentials such as disinfecting wipes, napkins/paper towels, a toothbrush, their favorite toy/book, bottled water and snacks. Depending on how far you move you may or may not receive your belongings the same day.

Medication

It is very important not to pack away any medication that the children whom you are moving with may need. Make sure they are packed in a way that is easily accessible. If the medication needs to be refrigerated, you must pack it in a portable cooler with frozen packs to support the temperature inside.

Travel entertainment

Depending on how far you have to travel to the next destination, it always help to keep the kids busy during the drive. Make sure not to pack away your iPads and other things you may use to entertain your children while focusing on the road.

Moving with the elderly

Medication

It is very important not to pack away any medication that the elderly whom you are moving with may need. Make sure they are packed in a way that is easily accessible not only to you but also to them. Make sure that they know exactly where their medication is in the case that you are busy handling the move and they need their medication. If the medication needs to be refrigerated, you must pack it in a portable cooler with frozen packs to support the temperature inside.

Comfort at the destination

This is not always possible, but if you are able to move a couple of furniture pieces before your main move date such as a bed or a comfortable rocking chair/lazy boy, this will be incredibly helpful for them when they arrive to your new home. While handling the moving process, this will help them feel comfortable for the time being in the new home.
